Malindi Pillar Tomb: Relic of Old Swahili Towns

Also of interest near Malindi Museum, close to Jumaa Mosque, are the old 15th century Malindi Pillar Tomb featuring an ornately decorated enclosure wall with unique concentric patterns on the panels and archways. The detailed facade with delicate inscriptions on the tomb, still in rather good condition, is quite fascinating. Between the mid-13th and late 16th centuries, Ancient pillar tombs, also known as pillar graves or columnar tombs, were a recurring theme in many Swahili towns along the coast, notable as the single architectural invention of the Swahili culture.

It is apparent that once the Swahili started building tombs, varying in appearance, the trend seems to have grown fast within a century or two, and they remained in fashion during the ‘golden era’ of Swahili stone building up to the 16th century along the Swahili coast. Always built above ground with durable stone material, making them easily visible when they were built within the urban fabric of Swahili towns, many of which have survived, they represented a core aspect of Swahili urban space and part of the everyday sensory experience of these old towns.
