Kipepeo Butterfly Farm: A Technicolour Show
Begun in 1994 as a community based project to support the livelihood of folks living around Arabuko Sokoke forest, Kipepeo Butterfly Farm is dedicated to the breeding, conservation, and display of these magnificent little fairy creatures. For the visitor, not much is left for imagination with the technicolour spectacle created by hundreds of exotic butterflies. The indoor gardens, planted with nectar-rich flowers and host plants specific to various butterfly species, are the main draw.
Kipepeo Butterfly Farm is both educational and recreational, offering visitors a chance to appreciate the beauty and importance of butterflies, while supporting conservation efforts to protect these delicate insects and their habitats. Visitors walk through the gardens and observe photogenic butterflies at close quarters. Photography is allowed. Behind the scenes, the farm cultivates butterflies from egg to adult stage in a controlled environment. This includes providing plants for larvae (caterpillars) to feed on and creating optimal conditions for pupation.
Thanks to their dedicated effort, Kipepeo Butterfly Farm now exports their pupae for exhibit to as far as United Kingdom and United States. Kipepeo (Swahili for butterfly) currently markets butterfly and moth pupae and live insects as well as honey and silk cloth produced by the community. The live insects hatched from their pupae are exported and displayed in insect parks globally. It is located close to the entrance of Gede Ruins Monument and is open daily from 8am to 5pm. Entry charges in Kes: Citizen Adult 100, Child 50; Non-Citizen Adult 200, Child 50.

Around Kenya are to be found a hatful of delightful nature parks and sanctuaries, many of these being community initiatives to protect wildlife in their natural habitats. Fairly small in comparison to the national parks and reserves, they offer a more intimate exposure to the wild, to fully appreciate the local flora and fauna.
