Kaaga War Monument? World War Bunker?

The B6 Embu-Meru Road and C91 Meru-Maua Road junction within Meru town is dubbed Makutano. This moniker, now referring to many busy intersections around Kenya, originated in the early 1950s as a small market sprung by the merchants and traders. Kaaga War Memorial is located 2.4 km north of Meru Town along the C91 Meru-Maua Road in Kaaga Primary School. Granted that this tiny brick house concealed by indigenous trees in thick bush is in a state of ruin, its importance in preserving the vivid past of colonial Kenya far outweighs its lack of visual appeal.

Still, it is but a small building, partitioned into two equal separate rooms, bunker like, supposed to have been a part of a military outpost during the World Wars for use as a strategic defensive front for various purposes. Post the Great Wars and self-rule in Kenya, this, and many war time monuments and relics, gained infamy, often evoking a sense of intrigue and curiosity, first as remnants of past conflicts hidden in plain sight, then as mysterious and exaggerated depending on the teller. or buried deep within the earth. Unconfirmed tales have it that King George V1 of England was hidden away in this pint-sized abode during the Second World War!

Be that as may it may, Kaaga War Monument is more associated with the King’s African Rifles, the precursor to todays Kenya Army Calvary Battalion who later used the small building as an armory when Kenya was still a colony. The area around Meru has a long-lived history as a military camp during in the colonial days, as confirmed by a number of colonial era disused munitions found at hand in recent times. The locals of older generation referred this location as ‘gwa kia’, meaning the place of the K.A.R – King’s African Rifles. This structures, built for protection, strategy and secrecy is often shrouded in mystery and local legends.
