Kilifi Boatyard: Pleasantly Tropical
Kilifi Boatyard, a working anchorage with a secure serviced mooring, is widely-known for its picturesque marina, beach and terrific coastal cuisine. This is Kilifi Creek’s response to the established Mtwapa Creek, with sea-facing eat outs like time-honoured Moorings and La Marina Restaurants. Much like the restaurants gracing Mtwapa, the hangouts at Kilifi Boatyard are creditable and the atmosphere is salubrious. Linking these two creeks, Mtwapa and Kilifi, is an outmoded ferry that operates between Kilifi Boatyard, Kilifi Ferry Landing and Mnarani Beach Club.
The center of interest at Kilifi Boatyard is the self-same establishment, with a beautiful little bar with amazing views in a functioning boat yard. It has fabulous food has been a family-centered favourite. The steaks are superb and the prawns are always excellent. After a great lunch, you enjoy the nice views, and the crab samosas pair well with a beer. There are boozy slushies, which are perfect for hot days. Kilifi Boatyard is much more than just an eatery, it has a tropical ambience atmosphere and friendly staff. The sundowner or early suppers never disappoint.
Particular to Kilifi Boatyard, if you fancy something quirky, is the floating, self-catering rental cottage, which sleeps up to six. Built in 2007 by Rene Faber and his co-directors, this trim, wooden cabin-style house, permanently anchored a few metres from the shore, adds, pleasantly, to the beauty of the peaceful creek. The site of the floating house on the heavily sheltered lagoon means that the waters will always be calm even when the waves in the open ocean are high, making certain that the guests prone to sea sickness stirred by the waves can cope.
Apart from the floating house, little else has changed in and around the fine Kilifi boatyard. It still serves as a hub for boat maintenance, repair, and construction, catering to various types of vessels, including fishing boats, leisure crafts, and sometimes larger vessels used for tourism. While it has, somehow, managed to keep away from the limelight, it has, alas, come under the peril of developers. Recently, the road into the boatyard was closed by a developer, making it difficult for patrons, many who have loyal for years, and tourists, to access the site!
