Mwangea Hill Forest: A Birders Paradise

The acroamatic 5 km2 Mwangea Hill Forest (also dubbed Mangea) is an isolated patch within the lowland coastal forests, situated 15 km west of Arabuko-Sokoke Forest. It is also listed as an important birding area (IBA). Over 125 species from 41 families were recorded in the Mwangea Hills Forest in 2009, with its expected species estimated at 190. Among the common species seen here are: Tropical Boubou, Zanzibar Greenbul, African Pied Wagtail and White-throated Bee-eater.

Uniquely, Mwangea Hill Forest is one of few coastal forests thought to still contain small populations of the Golden-rumped elephant shrew, listed as endangered. Rising 300 ms above the surrounding landscape, and forming part of the coastal lowland forest biodiversity hotspot, Mwangea Hill is marked by lots of balding patches indicative of land clearing to pave way for settlement. This risk, which in turn will lead to the clearing of more land, is imminent, as the population continue to grow. Mwangea Hill Forest can be reached via the C103 Malindi-Taveta Road.

Kenya’s vast forest reserves are of immeasurable importance in biodiversity conservation, water regulation, and carbon storage. Collectively, these forests, natural and exotic, cover 2008 km2 or about 3.4% of Kenya’s land surface area, and 15% of the most fertile land. They also provide important recreational and ecotourism opportunities for visitors to enjoy Kenya’s natural beauty and wildlife.
