Kitchwa Tembo Hill: A World War Lookout

Using Mtito Andei Gate, taking the main road and turning left at the 2nd junction (2A) and at the next junction (28) turning left again, straight over the crossroads at 21A, the easterly face of Kitchwa Tembo Hill comes into view. Situated about 45 km south of Mtito Andei Gate and 5 km south of Ngulia Hills, immediately north of the Tsavo River, it is many things to many people. To some it is one of the exigent hiking destinations in Kenya, first climbed in 1978 by Bill Woodley, then unveiled for hikers under the auspices of Mountain Club of Kenya (MCK) who operate hike adventures here. Ivory Tower on Elephant Rocks is ranked among the very best and revitalizing bush climbs in Kenya. To others the Kitchwa Tembo Hill, peaking sharply at 1,250 ms, is a distinguished World War One relic once used as a look out by German troops. To others it is none of these things. It is part of the primitive landscape of Tsavo West that is interspersed by notches of volcanic cones which also include Chaimu Crater and the Roaring Rocks. For more info contact MCK.
