Mida Creek Nature Camp: Airy Minimalism

Around Kenya, there’s a collections of camps and lodges that offer a serene and uncluttered retreat, focusing on essential comforts and a deep connection with nature – in unashamedly scenic unblemished locations. Mida Creek Nature Camp is a great example. It is a simple nature camp, in beautiful setting, to immerse yourself in the tropical coastal outdoors, and enjoy activities that connect you with the environment. A bucolic place to embrace a sense of childlike curiosity.

The outdoor setting is as good at it gets, on the fringes of the northern limit of Mida Creek, with a mangrove and opposite-number miombo forest, where you can explore and appreciate the natural surroundings. It is also next-door to the world famous Arabuko-Sokoke Forest and Gede Ruins. Mida Creek Nature Camp not only provides a refreshing break from urban life, but actively promotes environmental stewardship, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

Great for groups and family, it is an opportunity to disconnect from technology, reconnect with nature, foster a sense of wonder, curiosity about the outdoors, and test your wits about life in a minimalist off-the-grid wonderland. A return to innocence, really! By design or happenstance, life at Mida Creek Nature Camp encourages teamwork and camaraderie through group activities and shared responsibilities like cleaning up camp, setting up bonfires, and meals together.

Accommodation is provided in basic tree houses, raised on stilts with palm-frond thatched roofs. The level of comfort within these open-sided rooms is remarkably calming, and altogether matches the scenically-splendid location. It allows you to experience living close to nature. Amenities like power, running shower and toilet are adequate enough. Linen is provided. Into that bargain is the consummately simple on-site restaurant that dishes out superlative Swahili and sea-food cuisine.

An early morning at Mida Creek Nature Camp, suitably nourished, begins with guided walks to explore local flora and fauna, learn about trees, plants, and wildlife. There is a simple raised boardwalk at the camp for the shorter strolls. Seaward adventures are rather thrilling, aboard the traditional dug-out canoes, to explore the mangroves and marine ecosystem. Evening sessions, over a bonfire, to share stories, are enliven by a stellar night sky. Mida Creek Nature Camp is a great case in point of minimalism, and source of happiness in simple things.

Around Kenya are to be found a hatful of delightful nature parks and sanctuaries, many of these being community initiatives to protect wildlife in their natural habitats. Fairly small in comparison to the national parks and reserves, they offer a more intimate exposure to the wild, to fully appreciate the local flora and fauna.
