Kinuni Ruins: A Hidden Gem at Kuruwitu
Exploring historic ruins like Kinuni reconnects you with the past, uncovering stories of triumph, tragedy, innovation and decline of ancient civilizations. While largely untravelled, Kinuni ruins continue to inspire awe and curiosity, inviting the intrepid travelers to embark on a historic adventure. Kinuni is a small site of one antique mosque and a group of tombs found on a beautiful beach just north of a coral outcrop at the end of a well-kept access road to Kuruwitu Conservancy.
Portions of the site were excavated and reported on by James Kirkman in 1975. Only the western anteroom of the mosque stands, the northern part to full height. The surviving northwest doorway of the musalla is a simple archway with edges of coral. The western doorways of the anteroom were squared. There might have been a western verandah. The mihrab and the eastern areas of the mosque are completely destroyed. The tombs at Kinuni were labelled from A to E by Kirkman.
Of these, A is the largest at over 17 metres in area. Like many sites, Kinuni ruins is a fading relic that holds tales of past civilizations, offering intriguing glimpses into bygone eras. Once bustling with life and activity, it now stand silent, gradually been reclaimed by nature. Exploring Kinuni ruins can be a fascinating journey through time, sparking the imagination and prompting reflections on the past.
There are dozens of well-studied and accessible historic sites along the Kenya’s Coast. Some of the historic sites located here are composed of the old settlement towns and outlying groups of tombs. North to South, the coast is awash with a collection of ruins, found mainly along the beach, many of them on private lands.

Kilifi can be split into three zones – the narrow coastal plain, varying in width from 3 kms to 20 km; few coastal hills lying below 30 ms asl, and the Nyika Plateau rising from 100ms to 340 ms asl.
For the greater part of the year, the climate along the coastal plain is pleasurable, though humid. Temperature ranges between 21C and 30C along the coast, and between 30C and 34C further inland.
