Bio-Ken Snake Farm: Watamu Snake Park
A trip to Bio-Ken Snake Farm – a research centre dealing with reptiles, especially snakes – is one those places you’re unlikely to forget, after going over their rather exhaustive spine-tingling collection of some of Africa’s deadliest snakes, reptiles and insects. Over 127 species of snakes are kept at the farm, as well as a robust collection of rum reptiles, in what is the largest collection of its kind along Kenya’s coast. Visiting the snake park is surely a fascinating and educational experience.
Learning more about snakes, their behavior, and the actual risks they pose can help demystify them and reduce fear. Visiting Bio-Ken Snake Farm, a controlled environment where you can observe snakes safely from a distance, may gradually desensitize you to them. If your aim is to confront your ophidiophobia, start with less intimidating encounters, like viewing pictures or videos of snakes beforehand, to ease progress to more direct exposure, when observing them behind glass. It’s okay to have a fear of snakes, and not everyone needs to overcome it completely.
Bio-Ken Snake Farm offers guided tours, educational programs, and interactive exhibits where visitors can learn about the biology, behavior, and importance of snakes and reptiles in ecosystems. Photography is allowed, but always respect the rules and guidelines provided – teasing the animals is not allowed! Overall, the farm plays important roles in both conservation and education, helping to foster appreciation these often misunderstood creatures. It is located just 2 km north of the junction of Turtle Bay and Gedi-Watamu Road along Kanany Road.

Kilifi can be split into three zones – the narrow coastal plain, varying in width from 3 kms to 20 km; few coastal hills lying below 30 ms asl, and the Nyika Plateau rising from 100ms to 340 ms asl.
For the greater part of the year, the climate along the coastal plain is pleasurable, though humid. Temperature ranges between 21C and 30C along the coast, and between 30C and 34C further inland.
