Kilifi Bridge: Kenya’s Longest Bridge

Spanning 420 ms and linking Kilifi to Mtwapa, and further out to Mombasa, Kilifi Bridge is currently Kenya’s longest. A prominent infrastructure landmark spanning Kilifi Creek, along the B6 Road between Mombasa and Malindi, it’s iconic for many motorists – instantly recognizable. Completed in 1991, this hauncher girder type design bridge, tied up in three spans, crosses the picturesque Kilifi Creek. The widest and largest of the three spans is the middle that’s structurally superior.

Kilifi Bridge was officially commissioned by Kenya’s second president, Daniel Arap Moi, on 15th May 1991. It was constructed with great determination to replace the old ferry service that used to operate across Kilifi Creek. Presently, it provides a vital transportation link along the coastal route, facilitating easier and faster travel between Mombasa and Malindi. The bridge is a modern concrete structure with multiple spans, designed to accommodate both vehicular traffic and pedestrians.

Spanning over the water and mangrove forests of Kilifi Creek, over the cobalt blue ocean awash with both traditional dhows and modern fishing boats, Kilifi bridge offers scenic views to travellers. A gateway to Malindi. There are satisfactory marinas a short distance from the Kilifi Bridge which include the Kilifi Boatyard. 2 km away sits the infamous Mnarani Ruins. It is crossed 56 km from Mombasa.

Kenya is renowned for its stunning coastline along the Indian Ocean, offering a variety of beautiful beaches that cater to different preferences – from bustling resorts to quiet, secluded coves and picture-postcard creeks. Diani Beach, known for its powdery white sands and turquoise waters, is, perhaps, the most popular. Yet, each offers a unique experience, in almost always perfect tropical weather.

Touring Kilifi County offers a delightful blend of coastal beauty, lovely beaches, cultural richness, natural wonders, and fascinating ancient ruins. Whether you’re seeking pristine beaches, historical sites, or vibrant cultural experiences – or a combination, Kilifi promises a memorable and enriching travel experience.
