Mambrui Sand Dunes: A Fun Place to Explore

9 km north of Malindi you cross River Sabaki Bridge enroute Mambrui. East of the bridge and north of the river delta commences the stunning natural attraction of Mambrui Sand Dunes, which offer a unique and beautiful landscape, combining the beauty of the Indian Ocean coastline with vast, rolling sand dunes. It is an unexpedtedly pleasant sight along Kenya’s coast, as the unconsolidated, wind-blown white to creamy-coloured accumulations of sand that have been built up into dune ridges generally over 100 feet, with some standing over 200 feet high.

The dunes are aligned parallel to the coastline. The levels of coral reef are much higher at Mambrui (40 feet) than further south, although the levels are lower that at Mombasa Island at about 80 feet. Even so, the sand-bars in the sea around Mambrui, coupled with the growth of the coral, as was reported by the local Africans and early explorers, renders the harbour unsuitable even for medium-size daus. The sand dunes stretch for miles, creating an impressive landscape.

But Mambrui grew reasonably as the nearest large centre site to the estuary in early time. There are a hatful of reasonable resorts along its 4 km beach, including: Mambrui Golden Beach Bar and Cottages, Angel’s Bay Resort, Kola Beach Resort, Che Shale, Karibuni Villas, Barefoot Beach Camp and Ndoto Boutique Hotel, all within 6 km from the centre that double as jumping-off places to Tana Primate National Reserve (145 km north) or to Tsavo East National Park (300 km west).

Thanks to its diverse landscape, Kenya offers a wide range of outdoor adventures. Mount Kenya, Africa’s second-highest peak, offers various climbing routes. Experience a unique perspective of Kenya’s wildlife and landscapes with a hot air balloon safari over Masai Mara. At the coast, enjoy activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, kite surfing, and boat tours to explore coral reefs and marine life.
