The Sniper Tree: Myth or Legend?

One of the more captivating wartime legends among the natives of Taita Taveta is that of the hulking Baobab Sniper Tree and its occupier, a German dowager whose husband was slayed by the British Empire Forces during the World War battles in East Africa. Thirsty for blood and hell-bent on avenging the death of her husband, she hid in this hollowed baobab tree, Sniper’s Tree, and shot many unsuspecting British Guards. Of course, this whodunit has never been confirmed, and, truth be told, it remains an old-wives myth, but a rather intriguing one. In its favour there are a shedload of bullet holes in the Sniper’s Tree and its hollowed opening, high up the trunk, has space enough for one death or glory tenant and their gear. This Sniper Tree is found in Gicheha Farm, nearby Salaita Hill, about 8km from Taveta.
