A Rocha is a global family of conservation organizations working together, in response to the global crisis of biodiversity loss, to carry out community-based conservation projects. In Kenya, A Rocha is committed to ensuring the long-term survival of the five Malindi-Watamu Important Bird Areas (IBAs), designated so because of their international importance: Arabuko-Sokoke Forest; Mida Creek, Watamu Coast; Gede Ruins; Sabaki River Mouth; and the Dakatcha Woodland.
Collectively, these IBAs provide an unusually high diversity of habitats ranging from dry coastal forest, coast scrub and thicket, seasonal freshwater pools, estuarine sand flats, mangrove forest, tropical beach, reef, and off-shore rocky islands. A significant proportion of these habitats are designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and form part of Watamu National Marine Park and Reserve, the oldest marine park in Africa. By visiting A Rocha Conservation you are helping support the conservation work carried out in the Watamu-Malindi Reserve.
Located just 80m off Watamu Beach, Mwamba Conservation Centre offers affordable accommodation to everyone interested in spending time at Watamu beach. It is a wonderful place for birders, botanists, marine enthusiasts, nature lovers and all interested in wildlife, kitesurfing or just enjoying the lovely beach. Mwamba Conservation Center also caters for long-term resident researchers. It is run with an emphasis on an informal setting with guests and volunteers coming together with staff to share meals. All meals are prepared by their full-time chef.
Anyone interested in gaining a better understanding of the many issues associated with marine conservation, interacting with people of different faiths and cultures, Mwamba Conservation Centre brings all these together in the context of a shared interest in the environment. The encounter often leaves many guests challenged and motivated, living and learning from a diverse household, ergo guests have the option to take part in various conservation activities, including bird ringing, rock- pooling, snorkeling and counting waterbirds at Mida Creek and Sabaki Estuary.

Kilifi County can be split into three zones – the narrow coastal plain, varying in width from 3 kms to 20 km; few coastal hills lying below 30 ms asl, and the Nyika Plateau rising from 100ms to 340 ms asl.
For the greater part of the year, the climate along the coastal plain is pleasurable, though humid. Temperature ranges between 21C and 30C along the coast, and between 30C and 34C further inland.
