Malindi Museum: The House of Columns
From Gede Ruins Monument, it’s a short hop of 16 km Malindi town, reached soon after passing the Malindi International Airport located 2.5 km outside of the main township. Equally a necessary logistic for Lamu and Tana River counties as it is a holiday destination, Malindi town has lots to interest the visitor. Among its popular launches is Malindi Museum, along Silversand Road. It provides an opportunity to delve into the jam-packed history and cultural diversity of the Kenyan Swahili coast, offering a deep understanding of the region’s past and present significance.
Also known as the House of Columns, this was originally an Indian trader’s house, then the town’s hospital, before been reestablished as the first National Museum in Malindi. As a destination, Malindi Museum is one of the most attractive in Kilifi County, exhibiting an impressive display of artefacts related to different eras that have dominated the region in addition to hosting numerous temporary exhibitions and cultural festivals. The museum features exhibits on seafaring traditions, fishing techniques, and the interaction of local communities with the Indian Ocean.
Of particular interest at Malindi Museum is the displays of archaeological artifacts and relics from nearby sites such as the Gede Ruins, offering insights into ancient civilizations and trade networks that flourished along the coast. These exhibits also cover the region’s natural history, including displays on local flora and fauna, marine life, and environmental conservation efforts in the area. Malindi Museum is located 1 km from Malindi Roundabout via Tana Street and Silversands Road.
