Mutunguruni Giant Tree: Kenya’s Tallest Tree?
There are probably hundreds of majestic trunks around Tharaka Nithi County yet amongst the woodsy in Ndagani Village 1.5 km north of Chuka town are strikingly many-a-lofty trees that include the famous Mutunguruni Tree. Also known simply as the Mutunguru, it is openly preconized by the locals as ‘Africa’s tallest tree’ as avouched with a placard hung on its trunk. Thought to be 200 years old, standing sentinel at 62.5 ms in triumphant isolation, seen from far and yonder, it’s certainly, by any standards, a very tall tree. Not too long ago, what was unofficially dubbed Africa’s tallest tree is a Douglas Fir located in the Table Mountain National Park in South Africa. It reaches a top-notch height of about 66.5 meters (around 218 feet).
As the information age has swept across humanity, so have we realized Africa is home many other remarkable trees that stand among the tallest in the world. As it stands, at 81.5 meters (267 feet) approximated height, an outstanding specimen of ‘Entandrophragma excelsum’ discovered in a remote valley on Mount Kilimanjaro is presently considered Africa’s tallest indigenous tree. Equally impressive at a par height is a ‘Eucalyptus saligna’ in Limpopo province locally dubbed Sydney Blue Gum. While not native to Africa, this species has thrived in the region, achieving significant heights. Which brings the Mutunguruni Tree, at an estimated height of 62.5 meters (205 feet) in fourth place, but uncontested as the tallest tree in Kenya.
In Kenya there are a few contenders that contest the coveted title of tallest tree among these being the Giant Meru Oak in Imenti Forest. Locally dubbed “King Muuru”, the 160 ft tall Giant Meru Oak is about 60 feet shorter than the Douglas Fir. Akin to the Giant Oak, the area at the base of the Mutunguruni Tree has been used as a shrine for eons. Although it has never been confirmed as Kenya’s tallest tree, it is one of the paragons of nature worth a visit while in Tharaka Nithi. That said, the Mutunguruni Tree is nearly 30 ms shorter than the tallest known tree in the world. Among the redwoods that tower above the ground along California’s coast at Redwood National and State Park is a tree named Hyperion that dwarfs them all. The epic tree was discovered in 2006 and is 379.7 feet, or 115.7 ms tall.
