Amazing Luxury Lodges in Kilifi

Hemingways Watamu: A Icon in Coastal Luxury
It is a common prelude ahead of a safari adventure to Kenya to watch ‘Out of Africa’, or read Theodore’s Roosevelt’s ‘African Game Thrills’, a classic account of his 1909 safari, as is Winston Churchill’s ‘My African Journey’ about his East Africa adventure the previous year. Beryl Markham’s ‘West With the Night’ and Peter Mathiessens ‘The Tree Where Man was Born’ are stirring in adventure, too. One should also read Ernest Hemingway’s ‘Green Hills of Africa’, after whom this resort is named. Hemingway is often lionized for his adventurous lifestyle, and stories.
Watamu of the 1930’s may have inspired the idyllic paradise essence, complete with agreeable ocean-facing resorts, but the luxury that was cutting-edge when Hemingway came out to holiday here is hardly a match for today’s excellence in the lodging options. Then and now, Hemingways Watamu is a luxurious beach front resort, at one of the most beautiful stretches of beach in Watamu, looking out to the Indian Ocean. It is only 25 kilometers south of Malindi and about 110 kilometers north of Mombasa, making it easily accessible from both cities.
Ensuring that Watamu does not fall behind on the luxury curve, investors were quick to respond to the rapidly growing needs of travellers by making gainful investment in infrastructure and modish resorts to meets the needs of varied travellers. Although Hemingways Watamu is not a recent establishment, having catered to its guests for the better part of 40 years, it has, over time, had mega-makeovers to keep it updated. Today, it caters to luxuriously to travelers seeking personalized experiences. This may include private dining on the beach, bespoke excursions, and tailored services to meet individual preferences and interests.
It has stood the test of time, and is pleasing in every respect, drawing inspiration from the Swahili for both the exterior and interior of the lodging complexes. The resort itself offers elegant and spacious accommodation options, including chic rooms, suites, and villas. Each room is designed with modern amenities and often features stunning views of the ocean or the resort’s landscaped gardens. It has great option too: 1,2,3 or 4 bedroom ocean facing apartments; and deluxe ocean facing rooms, designed and finished to the highest degree of coastal luxury.
Fishing is still a big thrill for visitors here as are the sunset dhow cruises on Mida Creek, and, of course, playing a round of golf at either Vipingo Ridge or Malindi Golf & Country Club. The native fishing ngalawa boats remain a common sight. A time warp, setting it out as a sleepy fishing paradise. Water activities such as snorkeling, diving, and deep-sea fishing are popular thanks to the rich marine life and coral reefs offshore. Hemingways Watamu is located along Turtle Bay Road nearby the Medina Palms and Oceans Sports Watamu, 121 km north of Mombasa.

Around Kenya, there is a collection of rare experiences, in amazing lodges, offering guests intimate encounters with parts of the world not many get to know – and the chance to slow down and truly discover them.
