Birding in Kilifi: Falconry of Kenya
I km north of Malindi Police Station via B8 Malindi-Lamu, taking a turnoff left toward Maimoon Hospital, then a right to Mtangani Road, in 200 m, you arrive at the Falconry of Kenya. They harbours on-site a great assemblage of avifauna that include, falcons, eagles, goshawks and owls among the 41 species found here. First established as a snake and bird sanctuary, it later specialized in birds of prey. Today, the focus at Falconry of Kenya is to rehabilitate sick and injured birds.
Falconry of Kenya is one of only three such destinations in Kenya, alongside Raptor’s Centre, Nairobi and Naivasha Owl Centre, that offers a specialist area for birding devotees. The most exciting of all the night birds is the Barn Owl, which flaps its tail while asleep mimicking a swaying leaf to shroud itself from potential enemies. Visitors to Falconry of Kenya get to see many majestic birds up-close, feed them and assist in helping them to develop their muscles, as a falconer.

Kilifi can be split into three zones – the narrow coastal plain, varying in width from 3 kms to 20 km; few coastal hills lying below 30 ms asl, and the Nyika Plateau rising from 100ms to 340 ms asl.
For the greater part of the year, the climate along the coastal plain is pleasurable, though humid. Temperature ranges between 21C and 30C along the coast, and between 30C and 34C further inland.
