Port Victoria: A Quaint Fishing Village
The 22 km journey from Sio Port to Bukima travels astride Lake Victoria, along the western flank of Busia County. From Bukoma it is a short 3 km hop to Port Victoria in the extreme southern area. The scenic drive from Sio Port to Port Victoria has switchbacks of a resigned monotony of small fishing villages with one or two progressive centres along the way. Although relatively small and undeveloped, Port Victoria is a lively hub, thanks to its proximity to the shores of Lake Victoria.
Historically, Port Victoria served as a port for ferry services and trade along Lake Victoria. It provided a crucial transportation link for goods and people between Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and other regions around the lake. Efforts have been made to improve infrastructure and facilities in Port Victoria to enhance trade, transportation, and tourism. This includes the development of harbors, roads, and amenities to boost the town’s connectivity, economic potential, and prospects.
Despite its backward appearance, Port Victoria the foundation of significance here, at a place where fishing is the nucleus of subsistence. Upward of 5,000 households, accounting for half of the population living in proximate of the lake, rely on fishing. The recent upgrade of its communication links and amenities has suddenly the areas looking not-so-old and dewely in comparison. Newer stuff like a fish cooling plant at Marenga and the smooth roads are set to reignite its growth. Once upon a time Port Victoria had anchored the glamour of rural fishing.
Sparting improvement and bringing in investment, Sio-Port and Port Victoria, which serve as the major fish landing ports, are geering up to attract travellers too. A fairly populated town, Port Victoria offers an opportunity to see old fishing traditions in actions, as the hardworking anglers hoover in and out of the port in fishing vessels enlivened with motor boats. The tail end of Samia Hills culminates at the Port Victoria, forming a great landscape. It is found 18 kms south of Sio Port.
