Muhuru Bay: Idyllic, But Sold Short

Surprisingly little-known and untravelled is the delightful beach at Muhuru Bay, a small, picturesque fishing village 52 km west of the capital town of Migori, located on the shores of Lake Victoria on the southeastern quarter of Migori County. The area is resposeful mosaic of rolling hills, rocky outcrops, and beautiful views of Lake Victoria. The lake’s serene waters and distant islands create a scenic setting with several kilometres of white sands and, believe or not, scarcely any resorts.

The fact that very little fishing goes on around Muhuru Bay also means this bay is clean, relatively unspoiled and unexpectedly tranquil. Due to its proximity to the Tanzanian border, Muhuru Bay is a hub for cross-border trade between Kenya and Tanzania. It is agrestic, but there are, however, some modest hotels which offer descent accommodation that include: Matoso Sea Lodge and Muhuru Bay Resort at Muhuru Bay; or Lake Victoria Beach Resort and Supanova Hotel at Sori Town.

What’s more, the recently tarmacked C13 Migori-Suna-Muhuru Bay Road through Kobose and Ongoche centers, makes this easy to access. Muhuru Bay, with its proximity to Lake Victoria and natural beauty, has the potential for ecotourism development and lakeside resorts. Visitors are attracted by the serene lakeside setting, opportunities for bird watching, and the chance to experience traditional fishing practices firsthand. However, tourism infrastructure is still undeveloped, and there are efforts to tap into this potential for a distinguished touring circuit.

Kenya is renowned for its stunning coastline along the Indian Ocean, offering a variety of beautiful beaches that cater to different preferences – from bustling resorts to quiet, secluded coves and picture-postcard creeks. Diani Beach, known for its powdery white sands and turquoise waters, is, perhaps, the most popular. Yet, each offers a unique experience, in almost always perfect tropical weather.

Migori is a diverse and culturally rich county with vast agricultural potential, significant mineral resources, and proximity to important cross-border trade routes. While it faces challenges, Migori County offers great opportunities for touring, especially with attractions like Thimlich Ohinga and Lake Victoria.
