Brief History of Muranga County
The entire 80 km western border of Muranga County, from near Ndakaini Dam via Tuthu to Ruru Centre, is fringed by the Aberdare Range and its associated forests. Originally known as the Kikuyu or Nyandarua Range, with much of the forest lying in Nyandarua and Nyeri counties, the prominent Aberdare Range forms a section of the eastern wall of the Great Rift Valley. The Range itself is an elongated massif that stretches for over 160 km from Kiambu County, through Nyeri and Muranga counties, to the end of Nyandarua County. Reaching 3,999 ms at its highest peak of Ol Doinyo Lesatima, it is one the most spectacular natural landmarks in Kenya.
The center of interest at the Aberdare Range and Forests is the 762 km2 Aberdare National Park in Nyeri County, venerated as a gallery of rare alpine flora, waterfalls on icy rivers, and spectacular wildlife. Elephant Hill, one of Kenya’s epic hiking destinations straddles the border between Muranga and Nyandarua counties. In Muranga County, the areas around Kangema and Mathioya are known for the rampant human-wildlife conflict, especially of the elephants that stray from the reserve. Both these regions, whose scarped landscape is typified by miles upon miles of picturesque tea plantations, are home to the muck-talked about winding roads of Muranga. They are also home to some lovely fishing lodges and camps.
Kenya’s vast forest reserves are of immeasurable importance in biodiversity conservation, water regulation, and carbon storage. Collectively, these forests, natural and exotic, cover 2008 km2 or about 3.4% of Kenya’s land surface area, and 15% of the most fertile land. They also provide important recreational and ecotourism opportunities for visitors to enjoy Kenya’s natural beauty and wildlife.

Maximum temperatures ranges between 26°C and 30°C, while the minimum ranges between 14°C and 18°C. In the western area, which is mostly high altitudes, the minimum temperatures can be as low as 6°C in July.
The topography and geology of Muranga is more or less sloping westerly towards the long Aberdare Range, the rain catchment from where most of rivers draining it originate. All these rivers flow south-eastward bound, to join Tana.
