Lake Jipe Eco Lodge: New Sights, New Frontiers

Away from modern life, the 10-rondavel Lake Jipe Eco Lodge, fronting the east shore of Lake Jipe lying 500 ms away, is a simple rough and ready yet serene hideout. Its 10 bandas are modestly furnished, each with a private veranda and bathroom [with hot and cold shower] and a flush toilet. There is a restaurant, a stocked bar and pool, too. A campsite is located closer to the littoral. The lake, primarily fed by Lumi River with its headwaters at Mount Kilimanjaro, shrinking by a few km2 during the dry season, supports numerous endemic fish species and varied water birds that are fascinating for the fisherman and ornithologist. A good way to explore Lake Jipe is on a tour aboard the KWS fibre glass boats. There is also a popular raised and covered observation post overlooking Tsavo West.

North and east of Pare Mountains, with Mount Kilimanjaro dominating the horizon some 60 km to the northwest, the picturesque 30 km2 Lake Jipe lies astride the Kenya-Tanzania boundary. It is long and shallow, with a maximum length of 12 km and a maximum width of 3 km, its depth not exceeding 3 ms. Jipe is fed primarily by Rivers Lumi and Ruvu that have their headwaters on the snows of Kilimanjaro. Jipe is a birders paradise, especially vibrant between October and January when migratory birds come to nest and roost here. Camping facilities are provided and fishing is allowed with permission from KWS; though the assets have diminished much with time. Set in a hinterland where elephants had thrived for ages, with contact between the locals and the sentient giants becoming frequent, you might be lucky to see some in the vicinity. Lake Jipe is situated 30 km south of Ziwani.

Around Kenya, there is a collection of rare experiences, in middle-budget secluded hideaways, offering guests intimate encounters with parts of Kenya that rarely get under the limelight. Each getaway, secluded and away from civilization, is rooted in its local community and dedicated to showcasing their cultures.
