Mbulia Conservancy: In Between the Tsavos
If you’re planning a trip to Tsavo East or looking for an off-the-beaten-path safari, Mbulia Conservancy is a great addition to your itinerary. A relatively new addition to Taita Taveta’s conservancies, Mbulia Conservancy, there are 12,000 acres of it, is exceptionally situated between the Tsavo National Parks. It contains a large tract of completely unspoiled wilderness and is an important dry-season dispersal area for over 11,000 elephant in the Tsavos and numerous other wildlife and birds. It is also famous for the Mbulia Hills, a famed lookout offers stunning savanna vistas.
Importantly, too, Mbulia Conservancy acts as a buffer zone between Tsavo West and abutting villages, reducing human-wildlife conflict. It has reduced poaching threats through community rangers. As we now know, it is home to many high-standing members of the safari exposition, including elephants, lions, leopards, buffalos – and other species that migrate between Tsavo parks – that are targets to anthropogenic activities. Managed in collaboration with the local communities, the benefit loop ensures everyone benefits from tourism and conservation efforts, ergo it provides jobs and income through eco-tourism, and anti-poaching efforts.
Its anchor lodge Kipalo Hills Camp, perched on the Mbulia Hills, enjoys a stellar and rewarding view of Ngulia over to Mount Kilimanjaro. Any of the eight luxury double mobile tents have an en suite flushing loo and a traditional safari shower. The tents are either twin or double, with room for an extra bed. All their rooms are built to take advantage of the expansive views across the plains. A watering hole below the camp attracts prolific wildlife including elephants, buffalo and, if you’re in luck, leopards, spotted as they descend on the area for an early morning drink.
Next to spotting wildlife in their natural habitat from the convenience of Kipalo Hills Camp, fly-camping along Galana and Tsavo Rivers is a great opportunity to sleep out under the stars for a night or more. On consecutive terms, guests can enjoy a different Kenyan experience at one or more of Secluded Africa Lodges: Cardamon House (Kuruwitu Beach), Instinct of the Mara (Olderkesi Conservancy), The Sunbird Lodge (Lake Elementaita) and Delta Dunes (Lower Tana Delta). Less crowded than major parks, offering a more exclusive safari getaway, Kipalo Hills Camp is located 38 km north of Voi or 21 km south of Tsavo East Manyani Gate.
Kenya has about 110 wildlife conservancies, all promoting the placid co-existence of local people and wildlife in mutual well-being. Improved security, better land management, income, employment and support to community projects have all encouraged the epic rise of conservancies unique attractions and experiences.
