Taita Hills Complex

If a catalog of Kenya’s most impressive mountains, ranges and massifs was to be drawn up, the Taita Hills Complex would no doubt feature in, perhaps as the best in the southern half of Kenya below the equator line – exclusive of Mount Kenya which lies 17 km south of the equator and Mount Kilimanjaro just over the border in Tanzania. If you like mountains, or love the thought of driving along the edges, to beckon that sort of strange mystic and elation that only mountains draw, then this prominent terrestrial upland will uplift your spirits. Even without the possibility of exploring its hidden gems, this chain of ancient mountains is a visual masterpiece.

You don’t need to climb Taita Hills either to know that they are high, you can just drive up there. Covering 250 km2, with the highest peak reaching 2200 ms, the conspicuous bulk of Taita Hills, high above the surrounding flat plains, forms, as we now know, the northern most segment of the Eastern Arc Mountains emerging in the south-east frontier of Kenya, after running across much of eastern Tanzania, and ending at Voi. The forests here are remnants of ancient rainforests that once covered much of East Africa. The presence of part of this unique upland is well-known to motorists to Mombasa passing near it east-limits via A109 Road at Voi.

According to the season and time of day Taita Complex changes appearance, with its long, rutted rock tops protruding through the woodland. With no focal point of a high peak, the continuum views of Taita Hills is among the knockout landscapes in Kenya. It has three main massifs: Dawida and Sagalla near Voi and Kasigau 60 km south. Dawida Hill, the central massif, where Wundanyi town sits, is bound by Maktau town in the west, Ndome in the north, Voi town in the east and Mwatate town in the south. The views of Taita Hills along A23 Voi-Taveta Road are especial. Thanks to their elevation the area enjoy a cool climate, making it a highland haven.
