Anabas Mount Kenya Lodge: Chogoria Trail

First established in 1983 as the Kinondoni Lodge to bring the popular Chogoria Route to Point Lenana up to date, and recently reestablished as Anabas Mount Kenya Lodge, this rustic backcountry hidey-hole, set at 3,000 m in the hushed montane scape is a perfect launching base for hikers and as an alpine weekend getaway. Anyone touring Mount Kenya National Park through Chogoria Gate in Tharaka-Nithi County uses or goes through Anabas Lodge. Located about 33 km north of Chogoria, at the doorstep of Chogoria Gate in the moorland’s heart and overlooking the forest edge, it offers a restful base for those touring the mountain.

Right from the lodge you can sight various interests of Mount Kenya – Moorland, Point Lenana, Giant Billiard Table or Baren Table, Mpaku Marshlands, and Mau Mau Caves – which are easy to launch from here as well as to Lake Ellis and Nithi Falls. A venerated secluded getaway, Anabas Mount Kenya Lodge sleeps up to 40 in a series of wooden cottage with 4 layouts; executive cabin, deluxe cabin, executive cottage ad deluxe cottage. Guests must be self sufficient using the common mess for self-catering. It can be reached using 4×4 vehicles for trippers not planning to hike up to Point Lenana. A key highlight here is spotting wildlife in the vicinity, in the morning and evening, and evening bonfires to warm the crisp montane nights.

Around Kenya, there is a collection of rare experiences, in middle-budget secluded hideaways, offering guests intimate encounters with parts of Kenya that rarely get under the limelight. Each getaway, secluded and away from civilization, is rooted in its local community and dedicated to showcasing their cultures.
