Taita Research Station

Taita Research Station at Wundanyi was set up by the University of Helsinki in 2011 with a focus on geography and sustainability science, geo-sciences and atmospheric, biological and environmental sciences including studies on land change, botany and biodiversity, climate change, water resources, development and rural livelihoods. The varying topography, landscapes and agro-ecological zones together with biodiversity-rich natural environment and socioeconomic change in the Taita Hills and the surrounding semi-arid areas provide unique research questions and immense opportunities to both students and scientists. It supports research and teaching that contributes to the sustainable wellbeing of future generations and helps in the conservation of biodiversity in these forests.


Kenya’s vast forest reserves are of immeasurable importance in biodiversity conservation, water regulation, and carbon storage. Collectively, these forests, natural and exotic, cover 2008 km2 or about 3.4% of Kenya’s land surface area, and 15% of the most fertile land. They also provide important recreational and ecotourism opportunities for visitors to enjoy Kenya’s natural beauty and wildlife.

The county features diverse landscapes, including the Taita Hills, which are part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, and the vast plains of Tsavo, which are part of Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks – Kenya’s largest wildlife preserve.

The mean temperature in Taita Taveta is 23 Degrees Celsius, cooler around the hills and hotter on the Nyika where the Tsavos sit. Rainfall distribution is uneven, with the highlands receiving higher rains than the lowland areas. Taita mountain sphere receives the highest rains.
