Mount Kilimanjaro: The Tallest Of Them All

Granted that Mount Kilimanjaro lies just over the Kenyan border in Tanzania, the appeal of this magnificent haunt caps the beauty of the northern area of Taveta. Africa’s highest, and one of the most iconic mountains in the world, it is a bucket-list destination for many adventurers and nature enthusiasts. Rising 19,340 feet (5,895 ms) from the game plains near Kenya-Tanzania border, the snow-capped peaks and glaciers of Mount Kilimanjaro provide a stunning panorama. While you can sight Mount Kilimanjaro from Tsavo West National West, the best vantage on the safari circuit are at Amboseli National Park, best seen from Observation Hill.

It is within touching distance along the border town of Oloitoktok in southwestern Kenya. Its western summit is known in Maasai as ‘Ngaje Ngai’, the House of God. Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant stratovolcano composed of three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Kibo, the highest, is the main attraction, being the true summit of the mountain; Mawenzi rises east of Kibo to a height of 16,980 ft., and is of particular interest to the serious climber. Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Rongai, and Umbwe routes are the most commonly used for climbing. Whether you’re an active potential mountain climber or a mere beauty lover, Kilimanjaro is a must.

The climbs up Mount Kilimanjaro typically take 5 to 9 days, depending on the route and acclimatization needs. While it is not a technical climb, the altitude and varying climates make it challenging. It takes you through a fairyland of forest and waterfalls among the colourful, happy Chagga people who give the traveller as warm a welcome as can be had in any part of East Africa. The ascent of Kibo can be made from either side of the mountain, but the common ways are from Moshi (Tanzania side), and Oloitokitok (Kenyan side). Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the optimal months for climbing Kilimanjaro are January and July.
