Wesu Rock: Wundanyi’s Unmistakable Landmark

The fact that Wundanyi town sits in the middle of Dawida Hill should suggest a lovely outlook. It lies 30 km from Voi, west via Voi-Taveta Road then north from Mwatate for 17 km via C104 Mwatate Wundanyi Road. Past Mwatate the scenic road, steep and winding in most sections on the run up Taita Hills, is built along the contours in the shoulder of the hills. It has panoramic views on the open side of the road, getting wilder, mind-blowing and heart-stirring with the elevation in altitude. The town itself is surrounded by rolling hills, dense forests and a gaping valley. Likewise, the views from Wundanyi are comely, with misty mornings. The are is inhabited mainly by the Taita people, who have a rich cultural heritage. Their traditions, music, and crafts are an integral part of the region’s identity and draw.

Wesu Rock, sometimes known as Wundanyi Rock or Bluff, is unmistakable. The first impressions of it as you enter Wundanyi are utter dramatic, despite being widely photographed. A near perfect vertical rock face, devoid of forest, 1000 ft above the town, marking a sudden break in wooded hills, which gives an epic impression of a massive mural hang along the forest wall. It is not a hard hike to the peak with wonderful views over the country. The hillscape around Wundanyi offers many other opportunities for hiking. There are a handful of other appealing forested hilltops about Wundayi, to include: Ngangao Forest (highest point 1,952 ms), Chawia Forest (highest point 1,587 ms), Mwacha Forest (highest point 1,653), Mwachora Forest (highest point 1,657 ms) and Kuchuchenyi Forest (1,500 ms).
