Jomo Kenyatta Caves: History of Myth?
Any trip that takes in the tumulous area of Wundanyi shouldn’t omit a visit to the folkloric Kenyatta Caves, also known as Kino Caves. Situated 5 km kilometers from Wundanyi town at Mwanguwi village within a farm owned by Zephania Nyambu, Kenyatta Caves were gazetted as a national monument on January 25, 2015. To date, their geological curiosity and earliest occupation still stirs debate. It’s been suggested that the caves were used as a shrine and refuge at various times. But it is their association with Jomo Kenyatta that strikes major interest.
First from the invading Germans troops from German East Africa and soon after from the British forces. Well along, it is said that one of these caves was used by Jomo Kenyatta, after which they get their name, as a meeting room with fellow elders to discuss local affairs. At a joining cave is where he allegedly met the late Julius Nyerere of Tanzania. The third cave was a kitchen where Mr. Nyambu’s wife prepared meals for Kenyatta and his guests. A bed used by Jomo Kenyatta and by other freedom fighters in the caves has been preserved for posterity. Myth or not, these caves are worth a visit. Of interest nearby is Njama Mizango Cultural Centre.

While Kenya may not be as well-known for its caves as some other destinations, there are still some fascinating caving sites worth exploring. Before embarking on a caving expedition, it’s essential to ensure safety by going with a knowledgeable local guide, wearing appropriate gear, and being aware of potential hazards.
