Wasini Mangroove Boardwalk & Coral Garden

The looping 500 metres raised boardwalk at Wasini village, a joint venture by Biodiversity Conservation Program and KWS, is run and maintained by Wasini Women Group as a communally-owned initiative to showcase the fossil coral garden and mangrove forests of Wasini Island. Within Kwale, mangrove forests are confined to tidal estuaries, particularly at Shirazi, Wasini, Gazi, Majoreni and Vanga. The ecosystem seen along Wasini boardwalk is one of most elaborate at the South Coast and has huge scientific importance owing to its highly specialized aquatic organisms. For years, this vibrant fossil coral garden has been a draw for locals, with foreign visitors intrigued by the mere presence of the massive rocks.

Around Kenya are to be found a hatful of delightful nature parks and sanctuaries, many of these being community initiatives to protect wildlife in their natural habitats. Fairly small in comparison to the national parks and reserves, they offer a more intimate exposure to the wild, to fully appreciate the local flora and fauna.

Located along the Kenyan coast, and a hub renowned for its pristine beaches, rich cultural heritage, and breathtaking landscapes, Kwale County uniquely combines two of Kenya’s unsurpassed offerings – beach and safari. Kwale County is also a melting pot of coastal traditions, modern development, farming and trade to boot.
