Vanga Ruins: Kenya’s Southernmost Outpost

As the southern gateway to the Sultan of Zanzibar’s ‘ten mile strip’, with Lamu at the opposite end, Vanga was a center of interest as far back as 1821 when Sheikh Diwan moved there from Wasini. Unknown to many, the modest coastal fishing settlement of Vanga remains untouched by mass tourism. The intrepid explorer and history buff will find this secluded dreamy village a most rewarding place to explore. The more famous ruins are a site out in the mangroves located a few minutes walk out of Vanga. There, on a grassy rise above sea level, a little island about 200 metres long by about 100 metres wide, are found an isolated cistern and, somewhat farther north, a ruined mosque. At the cistern is a collection of umpteen 19th century ceramics. The old mosque is at the north end of the grassy high ground, but the north end of the build has been carried away by tidal action. Vanga is a trove of ancient ruins. Small tombs are scattered throughout, one of these having a pillar about 2 ms high, with the base of a 19th century European ceramic mug on top. Then there’s the Old British Customs House within the town.

There are dozens of well-studied and accessible historic sites along the Kenya’s Coast. Some of the historic sites located here are composed of the old settlement towns and outlying groups of tombs. North to South, the coast is awash with a collection of ruins, found mainly along the beach, many of them on private lands.

Located along the Kenyan coast, and a hub renowned for its pristine beaches, rich cultural heritage, and breathtaking landscapes, Kwale County uniquely combines two of Kenya’s unsurpassed offerings – beach and safari. Kwale County is also a melting pot of coastal traditions, modern development, farming and trade to boot.
