Paradise! The Sand at Chale Island Resort
17 km from Diani Mall you reach the tail-end of Diani Beach Road at the Chale Harbour, the jumping-off place to the picture-postcard Chale Island lying 600 metres seaward. It spans 1.2 km longwise and 0.8 km widthwise, with a north-south orientation. In the west it is separated from Gazi Beach by the 2 km wide Gazi Bay. Chale’s land use splits it to two areas: the resort and the sacred Kaya forest. The Sands at Chale Island Resort is set on 15 acres of indigenous ancient forest, with a superb 0.01 km2 white sand reef protected bay in the north area.
The resort itself is a contemporary mix of Swahili structures, Italian stucco, Lamu furniture, objects of African art, and varnished Mahogany – a chic blend of natural beauty and Swahili-inspired architecture. The 60 rooms provide various lodging options, including standard rooms, deluxe bandas, and honeymoon suites, which cater to diverse preferences. Three outdoor swimming pools are available for guests. An on-site wellness center offers various treatments. Multiple restaurants and bars serve a range of cuisines, including Italian, Oriental, and Swahili dishes.
Aside from its perfectly white sand bay, Chale Island is choc-a-bloc with a flare of variegated flora exemplified at the numinous in-shore tidal mangrove lake that is a must-see. Moreover, thanks to the lack of seaweed pile-ups, turtles frequently lay eggs in the bay. The surrounding waters are rich in marine life, including whale sharks and migrating whales. Kwale has monsoon type of climate marked by hot and dry weather from January to May and cooler temperatures from June to August. Average annual temperatures ranges between 24oC and 30oC.
Kwale is widely known for its 35 km long coast, where Diani Beach sits. Inland, the coastal uplands, commonly referred to as Shimba Hills, is a sharp elevation in altitude. The land then steeply falls again into the Nyika Plateau and Tsavo.
