Bunyore Hill: The Anyore Cultural Landmark
5 km beyond the busy gateway town of Luanda, seen to the right along the B1 Kisumu-Busia Road, are a series of hills marking the boundary between Vihiga and Kisumu counties. The 30 km long line of Bunyore Hills, draped by piles of granite rocks and forested peaks, are a revered cultural landmark. It is said the deities and descendant of Anyole made the hills their abode, ergo its hilltops are still hallowed shrines to date. Bunyore Hills form the headwaters for River Nasibi, which runs westwards to join River Etsaaba, before joining River Yala as a major tributary. Lower down, River Yala streams across Bunyore Hills en-route Gem.
Named after the resident Banyore (variant Bunyore) Luhya subtribe, Bunyore Hills at the last assimilate with Maragoli Hills to the far east, both liked for a great deal of oddities not least as the original residence for the Ankole ancestors. In days of yore both hillsides were a useful watchtower during tribal conflicts. Bunyore Hills claim to fame is also as a spine-chilling arena for ghost-casting rites, a stamping-ground for medicinal plants, and a hiking destination. Ebuhando Hill, the tallest, is the most popular trail. The Kima Rocks, Stone Hill Resort (built atop huge rocks) and Kima Church of God are among the places of interest around Bunyore Hills.
