Mange Hills: Potent Gusii Landmark
The lofty 5 km chain of Manga Hills, sometimes known as the Marongo Hills, are a shared asset between Kisii and Nyamira counties, and where the Manga Ridge is found. Nyamira takes the top of the cliff while Kisii takes the lower area. These lovely, verdant hills are not only a roadside attraction but are culturally important too. During migrations to this region, the Abagusii community are believed to have first settled on Manga Hills, before moving to other parts of the then Gusiiland.
The hills are full of caves and massive rocks that provided shelter for the people and allowed warriors to spot the enemy during attacks. These ancient caves are locally known as Ngurumuaga. Manga Hills later served as the first court, known as Ritongo during the colonial era, which was useful in settling disputes and negotiating dowry prices. The sporadic volcanic steam eruptions sighted in years gone by at the Manga Hills, in the late 1940’s, only added to their magnetism.
Some of the highlights around Manga Hills include, Manga Ridge, Rigena rie Manga Rocks, Engoro ya Manga (a deep spectral endless hole assumed to be linked to Lake Victoria), views of the Southern areas of Kisii with distance views of the lake, Ngora Mwaga or the ‘invisible’ Lake Okari, the Igena Monto Rocks, and nearby Ufanisi Resort. There is a waterfalls, too, at Ensoko. Overall, Manga Hills offer a stunning viewpoint, breathtaking scenery, and unique experiences.
