Kiabonyoru Hill: The Pinnacle of Gusiiland

Situated in northeast region of Nyamira County, just 12 km east of Nyamira town through Kebirigo, is the iconic Kiabonyoru Hill. It rises a tremendous 750 ms above the surrounding landscape, to a maximum throw of 3,000 ms. By the same token, Kiabonyoru Hill is the highest in Nyamira County, and indeed around Gusiiland – Kisii and Nyamira counties. It is among the much-liked hiking trails in the region. Kiabonyoru, Nyabisimba, Nkoora, Manga and Kemasare hills are the most notable natural landmarks in the county. Still and all, for tourism, the beauty and potential of these hillscapes, especially the prominent Kiabonyoru, is largely undeveloped, being only a rough-and-ready hiking destination for travellers with a strong desire to venture the untravelled. Of the 10 non-gazetted forests in Nyamira, covering 256 hectares, Manga Hills (76 hectares) and the Kiabonyoru Hill (11 hectares) are the most salient water towers. Propitiously, River Gucha, the longest in the region, alongside Sondu, Charachani, Kemera, Nyabomite, Eaka and Menyenya Rivers rise on the Kiabonyoru Hill. All these rivers eventually drain into Lake Victoria.
