Sekerr Range: The Sacred Mount Mtelo

The more ardent explorer from Mount Koh may wish to continue their hiking expedition at the Sekerr Range, which would round up a perfect hiking tour of West Pokot. Sekerr Range is about 10 km from Marich Pass Field Centre along A1 Kitale-Kainuk-Lodwar Road, and both these hillocks can be attempted from the comfort of this restful base. The hidden Mount Mtelo Lodge, nestled on the edge of the range, provides travellers with an unforgettable vista, allowing them to reconnect with nature and immerse themselves in this hauntingly beautiful place.

Sekerr Range, sometimes known as Mount Mtelo, is a most interesting part of Kenya in many ways – scenically, geologically, and because of interesting small mineral deposits that it contains. In 1961 Dr. McCall predicted a future for the gold workings in the area and for columbite in the north-west part of the area. Nickel-chromite prospect were done at Telot in the 1960s. Although commercial mining did not materialize, travellers to Sekerr Range can tour one of many traditional gold mines and experience pokot miners extracting gold from the earth using methods that have been practiced for centuries, relying on simple techniques

Spatially, Sekerr range forms a large part of the mid area of West Pokot County, and rises to 10,910 feet at Mtelo, the highest peak in the area. The forests on the Sekerr form a dense rain forest zone. Unique to Sekerr Range among the many hills and mountains in West Pokot is that it is one of the few that the resident Pokot community attach huge spiritual meaning to. They believe that their god (Tororot) resides here. And while the scale of spiritual rituals carried out here has diminished over the years, some are still performed facing the sacred mountain.

If the objective of the trip is to hike only Sekerr Range, then the Mtelo View Lodge set at the side of Sekerr Range is a suitable alternative. It can be reached using a motorable road which goes past Chetinon, Mariny and Mungat trading centres before arriving at the lodge. Sekerr Range, also known as Mount Mtelo, is the highest point in West Pokot at 3,336 ms and the 5th highest mountain range in Kenya following Mount Kenya, Mount Elgon, Aberdare and the Cherangani Hills.

Its moderate incline makes for a relatively comfortable hike through a land that carries exemplary views. It is, as we now know, considered as a sacred mountain and a popular pilgrimage shrine. In the upper reaches, looking southwards you can spot the Cherangani hills, as the landscape gradual slopes outward and eastwards to Kapenguria. Also in the north of the area in are the Karasuk Hills. It takes on average two days to hike and explore to the summit and around the range. Group hikes are encouraged. Potters and guides are available on notice.
