Mount Koh: The Iconic Cow’s Hump
There are numerous amazing hills and stunning mountain scapes around West Pokot County, each offering tremendously charming views, unique landscapes, and opportunities for outdoor exploration. Among these hills is the famous Koh, more proper Mount Koh. Its symmetrical cone shape and granite peak make it one of the most recognizable landmarks. Mount Koh, which in the local Pokot lingua translates as the ‘cows hump”, is both unique for its beauty and location.
The view of Mount Koh from Sigor converts an amateurs frame into a painting, thanks in part to its isolation within the Tamkal Valley. Geologically it is, too, an isolated massif of Cherangani Hills. As you begin the descent Marich Pass, and ever stunningly when you reach Marich Pass Field Centre, Mount Koh is easily recognized by its unique thimble-like peak. From the Marich Pass Field it is a short 8 km trip to the base of Mount Koh, just before arriving at the Wei Wei Scheme.
Mount Koh is a pleasant destination for hiking, either from Marich Pass or from Chesta Guest House or KVDA Guest House in Lomut. Make sure to carry food and drinks and attempt to start as early as possible. With a day’s notice a local guide can be arranged to help hikers navigate through unbeaten paths to little-known vantages, at a small fee. Also found near Mount Koh is Lomut Cultural Centre.
