Unusual Attractions in Kwale

Mwananyamala Maji Moto Hot Springs, Kwale

70 km from Ukunda along A14 Likoni-Ukunda-Ramisi Road via Msambweni you arrive at Lunga Lunga and the last useful town before entering Tanzania. There is a 6 km peripheral corridor between the border post at Lunga Lunga and that found at Horohoro on the Tanzanian side. 10 km before Lunga Lunga, at Lwayoni Village, the geological oddity at Maji Moto Springs also known as Mwananyamala. A nice scenic site that’s worth a look-see. It has geysers and bobs of hot springs gushing out of the ground to form a series of hot pools on surface bed. It is a sacred area of noted cultural value to the local Mijikenda nations as is the nearby Mrima Hill.

A wellness center has been earmarked for construction at the site by the Kwale Government, envisioning a unique high-end hot spring ecolodge with 20 rooms and a wellness spa on the 10 acres land property that’s determined and fenced. Of interest not far from here 5 km before Lunga Lunga, Lwayo la Mulungu, the famed deity imprints of an embossed rock footprint, continues to baffle the imagination of local Waduruma community. Having considered the odds, they attribute these to “Jesus” who they believe must have walked here. This is one of five ‘footprints of Jesus’ around Kenya as are those found in Meru, Makueni, and Vihiga counties.

Around Kenya are a selection of natural landmarks, cultural shrines, architectural oddities, and technological installations that offer incredible, almost surreal experiences that can make you feel as if you’ve stepped into another world. Hauntingly beautiful to some, eerie sights for others, and still, for others, down right strange, these site provide unique experiences for adventurous travelers.

Located along the Kenyan coast, and a hub renowned for its pristine beaches, rich cultural heritage, and breathtaking landscapes, Kwale County uniquely combines two of Kenya’s unsurpassed offerings – beach and safari. Kwale County is also a melting pot of coastal traditions, modern development, farming and trade to boot.
