Magado Cave Dwellings

Unusual Attractions in Isiolo

The Antediluvian Magado Cave Dwellings

Above Magado Crater, amongst the craggy ridge, hidden in plain sight lies another unusual attraction, muted away from the normal circuit of limit. Lo and behold, just over the hill, perched high along the upper limits of a small ridge, is where, by will or by the forces of conflicts, the resilient pastoralist and mining communities have uniquely opted to live, in these primeval, if not not-so-common, domiciles.

With some carved into, and others extended within old ones, the Magado cave dwellings, unusual in that they have been used by humans for thousands of years, providing shelter, tuned temperature, and protection, are all the same unorthodox dwelling in today’s world. Contrarily, today’s abandoned caves often reflect the cultural, historical, and societal context of the regions in which they are found.

Appearances and norms aside, the residents of the Magado cave dwellings do enjoy unbroken views of the valley and hills outwith, and which, considering the difficulties of getting into, offer loftier security in case of any alarm. These cave dwellings are found 2 km from Magado Crater, about 10 min. walking distance.

Around Kenya are a selection of natural landmarks, cultural shrines, architectural oddities, and technological installations that offer incredible, almost surreal experiences that can make you feel as if you’ve stepped into another world. Hauntingly beautiful to some, eerie sights for others, and still, for others, down right strange, these site provide unique experiences for adventurous travelers.
