Shelly Beach: The Nearest to Mombasa

Across the channel from Mama Ngina Waterfront Drive, just a hop east of Likoni Ferry Service, lies Shelly Beach, the nearest to Mombasa City. The seashore does not have plentiful white sand like other beaches along the Kenyan Coast, but as its name lends credence, Shelly Beach is widely-famous for the myriad of seashells left behind by wave deposition. Situated on the mouth of Kilindini harbour, Shelly is the nearest to Mombasa Island along the South Coast. It eventually links to Tiwi Beach, just 17 km south, above the famous Diani Beach. Unlike Shanzu, Bamburu and Nyali beaches in Mombasa’s North Coast, Shelly lacks a robust list of resorts.

The few and far between hotels found here are mostly located along the Likoni to Ukunda Road. Some of the lovely resorts along Shelly Beach include; Talentos Resort, Qwetu Resort, Shelly Beach Hotel, Consolata Guest House and the A.C.K Guest House. Still, along Shelly Beach are dilapidated ruins that were once busy resorts, now but a memory of the glorious past. In the 1990s, when cruise ships used to dock in Mombasa, Shelly Beach was booming with business, revered as the first stop for international tourists. One of the heyday icons, the Shelly Beach Resort, constructed in 1942, was among the premier hotels in Mombasa. Although abandoned years ago, some of the builds are still standing after a recent revamp.

Kenya is renowned for its stunning coastline along the Indian Ocean, offering a variety of beautiful beaches that cater to different preferences – from bustling resorts to quiet, secluded coves and picture-postcard creeks. Diani Beach, known for its powdery white sands and turquoise waters, is, perhaps, the most popular. Yet, each offers a unique experience, in almost always perfect tropical weather.

Located along the Kenyan coast, and a hub renowned for its pristine beaches, rich cultural heritage, and breathtaking landscapes, Kwale County uniquely combines two of Kenya’s unsurpassed offerings – beach and safari. Kwale County is also a melting pot of coastal traditions, modern development, farming and trade to boot.
