Annual Festivals in Kwale

Kite Festival: A Wholesome Family Event
The very first Kite Festival in Kenya was held in June of 2021 and hosted by Nairobi Polo Club. Since its inception, the festival has grown to become a prized outdoor family event; the second international kite festival in Africa. It’s all about pleasure, family and kites. To bring the magic of seeing hundreds of kites flying in tandem at Diani, the Sands at Nomad took up the challenge of hosting the event. And thus, the 7th edition of the Kite Festival was the first ever Diani Edition, held on the 5th and 6th of June, 2021. Since, the fun and colourful festival takes place between June and August each year and attracts many visitors from the South Coast area.
Kite Festival takes place against the glistening panoramic view of the ocean, as the sky is whooshed up with a multi-coloured, eye-catching display of kites – prism, diamond, flake, cellular and rokkakus – bigger and better each year, fluttering and floating in the wind to the delight of many fans. Kite flying isn’t what it used to be! Modern technology has influenced it significantly, and now we have materials that advance comfortable flying, with improved aerodynamics. The Diani Kite Festival brings together kite fliers and kite makers, growing in the number each year, kites bigger, meaning locals will set up shops to sell kites and contribute to the festival.

There are a variety of festivals throughout the year in Kenya, celebrating the diverse cultures, traditions, music, art, and wildlife. These annual festivals offer opportunities for cultural exchange, entertainment and exploration, allowing visitors to experience the vibrant and dynamic spirited cultures of Kenya.
