Shimba Hills Lodge: Blend of Safari and Chic
Shimba Hills Lodge is set in the northern corner of Shimba Hills National Reserve, reached by taking an exit off C106 Kwale-Kinango Road 1 km beyond Kwale town. A well-defined signage is placed on the road to assist travellers. Renowned as the only tree lodge in the country’s coastal rainforest, the lovely design of Shimba Hills Lodge, established in 1986, emphasizes natural materials, particularly cedar wood, creating a warm and relaxing atmosphere that harmonizes with its lush outdoors. Exceptionally, too, it is one of three celebrated tree lodges in Kenya, which all take beautifully to their unique and contrasting rain-forest and tropical surroundings.
All-around it has a guileless open-space theme to give precedence to the wilder outdoors, where wildlife roams freely. A generous end-to-end veranda directly overlooks a modest waterhole which is never without a great variety of game. A wooden tree top walkway leads directly from the lodge into the forest. On the platform at the end you may want to sit down, have a drink and enjoy nature at a place where nothing can disturb the tranquility. The 20-rooms at Shimba Hills Lodge are split into suites, twin, and triple rooms spread over the three levels, all with generous glass windows, snuggly private balconies, and fine forest outlooks.
The suites in particular are spacious, ideal for honeymooners and small families, featuring a comfortable living room and a balcony overlooking the waterhole. The African-inspired design provides a homely feel with an adventurous touch. The twin rooms, equipped with two single beds facing the waterhole, include large glass doors leading to a private balcony, offering guests the chance to observe wildlife in the mornings. An on-site restaurant serves a variety of dishes that cater to diverse palates. Guests have praised the Shimba Hills Lodge for its stunning setting, views, friendly and professional staff, and enjoyable dining experiences.
