Unusual Attractions in Elgeyo Marakwet

Kipteberr Meteorite Site: Strange, Scenic, Unique
On appearances alone, there is something quirky about the dome of the Kipteberr Hill, situated 5 km south from the main Cherangani Forest. The hill is notable for its cultural and historical import to the local communities, as well as its scenic beauty and ecological importance. Kipteberr Hill gets its name from its canny likeness to the hump of a bull, locally known as Kipteberr. According to old-wives tales, this is where a meteorite fell on villagers, killing scores who did not heed the warning of a crow that there would be a disaster. True or false, it is a long-lived forklore.
Kipteberr Hill holds great cultural importance to the communities living in the surrounding areas, including the Marakwet people. It is often associated with traditional ceremonies, rituals, and folklore passed down through generations. It is also around the Kipteberr Hill that the Marakwet Community claim their genesis. As it goes, they originated with five territorial groups who associated with each based on their collaborated heritage along the Kerio Valley and the Cherangani’s.
At the top Kipteberr Hill offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the Kerio Valley, Cherangani Hills, and Elgeyo Escarpment. Its myths, rugged terrain, outcrop, and lush vegetation make it a great destination for nature lovers and photographers. For exploration, there are a network of trails and paths, offering options for exploration and adventure amidst its natural beauty.
Kiptaberr Hill is among the outlying forest fragments of the Cherangani Hills Forest Reserve. Efforts are underway to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of Kipteberr Hill, including initiatives aimed at documenting traditional knowledge, promoting sustainable tourism practices. Kipteberr Hill is situated near Kapcherop market centre, close to the Kenya Forest Service station; 77 km distance from Iten.
