Kinangop Step: An Unusual Settlement
Human settlements come in all shapes and forms, some that are quite unusual based on their locale, design, or the way people adapt to extreme environments. Away from the far-flung unique dwellings in Northern Kenya, with many riveting examples, is the floating village in utterly beautiful surroundings sited immediately north of Kijabe Hill. While not entirely isolated, it is definitely cut off from the rest of the area by the imposing escarpment and valley below. Rather unmistakable for the A104 bound motorist beyond Kobil Heni Stopover, halfway down to Naivasha, the blissful village between the road and the deep valley below appears to exist on an overhang ledge that ends abruptly in a sheer cliff. This is the Kinangop Step.
It is not flat as it appears driving along its extent, rather, the Kinangop Step tilts slightly northerly with an altitude ranging from 2500 to 2680 ms. Although this flattened marginal strip, step, or plain is commonly referred to as a plateau it is, in-fact, a step on the side of the Rift Valley, forming a plain or platform which is about 16 km long. The surface of Kinangop Step is smooth, much of it is under farms and homes, though a portion noted in the south is covered by forest. The step forms a natural geological border between Rift Valley and the Aberdares. It is well watered, too, drained by the Makungi, Kitiri, and Turasha, all tributaries of the Malewa River which ultimately discharges into Lake Naivasha. Along its southern limits the Kinangop Step forms a catchment for streams feeding the Athi and Tana.
