Nyalani Dam: The Sightly Kinango Dam
Surprisingly unknown, Nyalani Dam is found at Vigurungani village in Kinango via the C106 Kwale-Kinango Road, 6 km north of Kwale town. Sometimes referred to as Kinango Dam, its origins are still contested over. Some say it was discovered by Samburu herders in the 1970s. Others say it was dug in 1952 by the British Colonial Government. Either way, Nyalani Dam is an important lifeline for the residents of Kinango. After years of neglect, the dam was rehabilitated by Mpesa Foundation and Kenya Red Cross, among other partners, in 2013. Josephine Mamuu, a local resident, says before Nyalani Dam was rehabilitated, she used to walk for more than 20 km to fetch drinking water at holes they dug when the dam dried out.
During dry seasons, no one thought of farming as it would have been a labour in vain. Kinango area, erstwhile prone to seasonal drought, is on the way up with each new harvest and the renewal of the Nyalani Dam, in part a preventative measure to obviate the disaster of foot shortage. It illustrates the brilliance and arrogance of human ingenuity to spur agricultural and industrial development using simple but significant logic. Farming, in beautiful surroundings, is now on-going. Likewise, Nyalani Dam has added much to the beauty of the area and makes for an unusual coastal walking tour. On June 18th, 2021, construction of Makamini Dam, also in Kinango, began. On completion it will be an ace resource.
Kenya has several reservoir dams that play a consequential roles in water supply, hydroelectric power generation, irrigation, flood control, and other water-related activities. The most famous of these are Seven Forks Dams along the Tana River. While reservoir dams are critical infrastructure projects that contribute to Kenya’s economic development, they are also visually stunning go-to destinations.

Kwale has monsoon type of climate marked by hot and dry weather from January to May and cooler temperatures from June to August. Average annual temperatures ranges between 24oC and 30oC.
Kwale is widely known for its 35 km long coast, where Diani Beach sits. Inland, the coastal uplands, commonly referred to as Shimba Hills, is a sharp elevation in altitude. The land then steeply falls again into the Nyika Plateau and Tsavo.
