Funzi Island: The Picturesque Wadigo Enclave

As the earliest permanently settled island of the four principal islands distributed within the provisional marine territory of Kwale County, Funzi Island, at the very least, offers several scenic routes through a scene of arcadian tranquility, in and out of villages resided by the seafaring Wadigo community. Teeming with life and completely surrounded by dense mangrove swamps, the island bedazzles with an unexpected hidden beauty. Its agrestic nature is only balanced by the warmth of the locals who impart a classic Swahili charm to the otherwise modest benighted society. Past the villages, the winding paths lead to the beach and lush tidal inlets.

Funzi Island is comprised of four mangrove covered islets, with only one being inhabited. The island is venerated for its self-same exclusive, boutique, family-run Funzi Keys Resort. This secluded, tranquil up-market getaway, designed to blend unobtrusively with the paradisal oceanfront, captures the imagination of the great stretches of golden sands. It is situated at the western area of Funzi Island. Also found on the Island, a short distance from the Funzi Keys, is the middle-budget Mikoko Cove Ecolodge and Mangrove Hotel. Other highlights at Funzi include: boating tours along Ramisi River lined on either side with dense mangrove forest, a visit to Funzi Turtle Club, exploring the historic sites or guided cultural passages.

Kenya is home to several beautiful islands, each offering unique attractions and experiences. Mombasa, a term interchangeably used to refer to the city and county, is the most developed. Further north, Lamu Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is an enchanting destination. Overall, islands in Kenya offer a mix of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and recreational activities, making them popular.

Located along the Kenyan coast, and a hub renowned for its pristine beaches, rich cultural heritage, and breathtaking landscapes, Kwale County uniquely combines two of Kenya’s unsurpassed offerings – beach and safari. Kwale County is also a melting pot of coastal traditions, modern development, farming and trade to boot.
