Merti Catholic Church: Not A

There are several widely-known churches around the world that were designed with architectural elements inspired by mosques, or that were originally built as mosques and later converted into churches. These buildings reflect a fascinating blend of religious and cultural influences, often occurring in regions with a history of Islamic and Christian coexistence. If you find yourself at Merti, the small dusty town north of Isiolo, you ought to visit the little-known Merti Catholic Church.

At first glance, it oozes the classic Arabic Mosque baroque and angular holding design, yet, comparable to Lamu Catholic Church at the coast of Kenya, Merti Catholic Church has been deliberately designed to look like a Masjid. The cross on its facade dictates otherwise! It was purposely designed by Italian missionaries who landed and fell in love with the local community here. They soon found out that most were Muslim and they blended the design of the church with a Mosque.

Akin to its peers around the world, Merti Catholic Church represent a fascinating intersection of cultures and religions, where Islamic and Christian architectural styles coalesce to create unique structures with layered histories. Moreover, Merti Catholic Church is built at the base of the imposing Merti Plateau, a distinct and isolated massif rising almost 500 ft above the surrounding area, which forms a conspicous landmark, bound by scarps rising over the peneplain landscape.

Around Kenya are a selection of natural landmarks, cultural shrines, architectural oddities, and technological installations that offer incredible, almost surreal experiences that can make you feel as if you’ve stepped into another world. Hauntingly beautiful to some, eerie sights for others, and still, for others, down right strange, these site provide unique experiences for adventurous travelers.
