Givera Shrine: Mysterious Jesus Wagevere Rock
The ambuguity of the footlike imprint on a rock at Givera Shrine, locally dubbed Matsigulu Mystery Rocks or, more high-sounding as Jesus Wagevere Rock, set within a private farm at Givere village has been the fascination of many a traveller. Much the same as in other parts of the world, betokening the presence of deities, Givera Shrine is an unusual attraction. And while not unique in Kenya, having at least five such sites, for most religions, proof, including mysterious footprints, is a darling of faith. And wherever it has been claimed to have proof of God, there has been much torelance unlike in the days of yore when they would be assassinated.
Obscure and cryptic, Givera Shrine was, at the onset, a source of division within other beliefs. Because whose God would it be? But as everyone who has read the American poem “Footprints” knows, the reveal comes when the narrator learns that he has not been walking alone in those difficult moments after all. Jesus tells the soul, “During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.” The same stands true at Givera Shrine, where the footprint is engraved next to a doodle maze of indecipherable writings etched on the surface of the rock, which raises the mystique of the site ten-fold.
By the same token, the Givera Shrine has attracted a lot of religious attention and has been the subject of old wives tales and myth including that of anyone trying to tamper with both the footprint and the writings would be stretching their luck too far. In 2009, as the locals claim, a stone mason in the village was struck by illness when he attempted to break the rock for construction. First reported in 1965, it is, beyond doubt and explanation, a source of deiform power for the community and a pilgrimage shrine for many native denominations. It is also thought the rock has healing powers; where people seek divinity. Givera Shrine is located at Matsigulu.
