Ngare-Ndare Falls: A Picture-Postcard Gem
There are many stunning waterfalls around Kenya – tall, hot, wide, frigid – each offering stunning scenery. To appreciate the vistas of Kenya’s tallest, you have to hike up to 10,000 ft, deep inside Mount Kenya Park, below Lake Michaelson, to explore Vivienne Falls. To find one of the prettiest, perhaps one of the smallest, you would be hard-pressed to outmatch Ngare-Ndare Falls with a fairytale rock pool in the northern foothills of Mount Kenya in the same-name forest reserve. It is reached at the tail-end of the 3.5 km walking trail, which takes about an hour.
There are some areas that are quite steep, manageable by the walker of average abilities. Lo and behold! A waterfalls with azure water in lush dramatic mountain scenery. It is a breathtaking natural wonder in Ngare-Ndare Forest Reserve. The pleasing blue color is often due to minerals like calcium carbonate and a unique geological condition that reflect light in a way that creates its mesmerizing hue. In pleasant weather, the pool renders a deeper blue thanks in part to the reflection of the sky. It is obligatory to dip your feet or take a bath in the picture-postcard pool.
