Tamalu Farm: Stencil on Regenerative Farming

The compact 10-acres Tamalu Farm, on the slopes of Mount Kenya, rejuvenated just over 15 years ago as a flower farm, following an idle period of 12 years when nothing was farmed. Presently in January 2019 the resolve was strong and solid, taking control of the land with a renewed tenacity and long-term aim to lead the region’s transition towards better land stewardship for small to medium farms as well as contribute to the movement globally. And thus Tamalu Farm began a new lease of life as a farming center of farming excellence that advocates avant-garde methods which are ecologically sound, economically viable and socially inclusive.

The model at Tamalu Farm is an intensive design with compatible components within a single agro-ecosystem. This symbiotic farming system encourages the beneficial relationship between healthy pasture and healthy animals, tree cover and diversified forestry products. This new system works on any scale. With the average farmer at 60 years old, and 50% of all agricultural assets due to change hands within the next decade, the continent is entering an unprecedented time of disruption in its farmlands and food systems. Needed: A system of farming modus and practices that increases biodiversity, enriches soil, improves watersheds, and enhances ecosystem services. It aims to capture carbon in soil and aboveground biomass, reversing the current global trends of atmospheric CO2 accumulation.

Tamalu Farm organizes business and family farm tour to visit their farm and learn more about their regenerative and agroforestry practices. The most popular is the family and friend farm tour, which runs on Saturday’s from 9:00am – 10:00 am, is a perfect day out for families with kids. Where you get to pick your own produce, learn more about farming, get your hands dirty, and weigh and pay. It costs 2,500 per person, and 1,500 for kids under 10 years, with booking minimum of 2 people and maximum of 10 people. For groups over 10, warranting a discount, need prior arrangement. Important to note: Carry your own kikapu or crate to carry produce, carry plenty of drinking water, and sun protection hat, sunblock, covered clothing.

Taking cognizance that Kenya is primarily agrarian, farm tours are a fantastic way to learn about the backbone of its economy, connect with nature, and gain insight into the operations of working farms. As diverse as they are unique, farm tours provide an experience and a deep connection to the land. It is great fun, too!
