Waterfalls in Nyamira County

Nyamira (Keera) Falls: Underrated Beauty

4 km from Nyamira town is a site whose beauty and rich history continues to draw visitors in good numbers, at Nyamira Falls, also dubbed Keera Falls. Still fairly untravelled, Nyamira Falls in a pleasant fan waterfall – the water spreads out as it descends, creating a broad, fan-like shape – well off the beaten path. It offers a fine afternoon of walking. The main activity here is watching the waters cascade, and maybe a dip at the rock pool. Although underdeveloped, it is still fascinating, and the myths surrounding Nyamira Falls only serve to pique its interest further.

The 35 ms Nyamira Falls, with a basin-like formation at the base of the waterfall, resembling a natural bowl or amphitheater, also has spooky caves at the bottom, which are unexpectedly dramatic. In days gone by, rainmakers gathered here to make their sacrifices. The foregone ancestors often brought bundles of firewood to appease a creature they had heard of in stories told by their grandparents. Whenever there was drought, the elders performed traditional dances at the entrance of the main cave, and often animal sacrifices were left inside the cave.

This, it was believed, appeased their deities and ancestors, who bestowed rain spells in exchange. Nobody brings firewood here anymore. Those who gather here simply enjoy the scenery and retell the stories surrounding the falls. Indeed, it is one of those places that creates a scenic and tranquil setting, surrounded by rock walls, a year-round verdant surrounding and wide views over the area. A must-see destination. Nyamira Falls is located 4 km north of Nyamira town, using C21 Nyamira-Kadongo Road, in Rangenyo village of Bogochora location.
